getting old - saturday, january 30, 2010 - 21:24
it has begun. one of my best girlfriends got engaged last night. thus begins the steps into the period in our lives where people get married and start their families.
my 10 year high school reunion is also this september.
i remember graduating college. i met lucio when i was 21 years old. i will be 28 this year. where on earth did the time go? fortunately, it's gone to a lot of happy years, with more to come, all willing.
if you don't know, now you know - wednesday, may 13, 2009 - 10:45
i got laid off about a month ago, and michiagn's economy is about as bad as it gets. this means good jobs are hard to come by.
while we've thoroughly enjoyed living here in the midwest and have met some truly wonderful people, we couldn't be more excited to be back in the bay area and back to some other truly wonderful people.
see you soon oakland!

it's been awhile! - thursday, january 22, 2009 - 13:43
dang, haven't been on oaklog since october? yowza. it's blocked at work, but i plan to be around more. hope ya'll are well.
p.s. i'll be arriving in CA for a sadly brief 4 day trip on the night of feb 18th. woot!
open letter to michigan - wednesday, october 22, 2008 - 10:28
dear michigan,
i have been really enjoying your fall season. the colors are just beautiful, and the crisp clean air just makes me want to roll around in a pile of leaves and hug a pumpkin. in fact, we realized today that our first trip out here was exactly one year ago tomorrow, in fact the exact day that jenny is arriving from california. i mean look, gorgeous!

however, when i hear that you are planning on dumping SNOW on me 2 days next week, i want to kick you in the face. if you haven't realized, it is still october. i am still enjoying biking to work. it is still considered the season called fall. snow is highly inappropriate. get with the fucking program.
icily yours,
tara
animals really love us - tuesday, october 07, 2008 - 08:37
this little lady found us and the dogs on a walk last night. we think she's a stray, as she was dirty w/no collar, and obviously quite young.

likes:
-warm baths
-chasing daegan's tail
-wrestling with meatball's face
-trying to engage with beans
-being picked up and purring
-eating
dislikes:
-sleeping in the back room alone
-beans' anxiety over her
she is still nameless.
it's a beer-icle - tuesday, august 26, 2008 - 07:02
when we first moved to grand rapids, we immediately saw how disappointing the beer situation was looking. we saw mainly cheap beers in stores, and their costs were around $8.99+ for a 6-pack. we eventually discovered a cute little pub that featured a variety of good beers, including my favorite: red tail ale from the mendocino brewing company. the bartender informed us that red tail could be found, but at $13+ a 6-pack, and the brewery was stopping its distribution to the midwest. i was heartbroken. i've had it on occasion since moving here, at a bar, and back on the west coast for visits. the local upscale beer and wine store 1/2 miles from our house had a period where they had an excess of red tail lager for $4.99 a 6-pack, and we definitely indulged, but my itch wasn't scratched.
the other night lucio comes home and shares with me a miracle that lifts my spirits. at martha's (beer store), they had a huge display of all the mendocino beers: red tail, eye of the hawk, blue heron, black hawk, and a tasty seasonal bach. all at $4.99 a 6-pack. not believing my eyes, i ask the guy behind the counter. "it's all or nothing distribution" he says. "they bring them buy and we can either buy them all or none at all. so when they're here, they'll always be in mass quantity and this price." i couldn't believe it. yes, sometimes they won't carry the beer, but that will make it all the more special when they do. it will always be about half as expensive as it is in my lovely home state of california. my favorite brewing company, in MI, at a price i will always be able to afford? beautiful.
thank you, mendocino brewing company, for arriving so perfectly into my michigan life. i miss you, but now a part of you is here with me.

hi oaklog - monday, july 07, 2008 - 09:27
i'm back; i've missed you.
sometimes your friends show up in MI and that's wonderful:

farewell oakland - tuesday, may 13, 2008 - 09:25
for those who we got to spend a little time with: thank you, i love and miss you and am thankful for your time.
for those i didn't see: family obligations kept us pretty busy, but you were in my thoughts and we'll hopefully be back very soon.
it was am amazing trip; off to the airport.
leaving home sucks every single time.
RIP Oliver - tuesday, may 06, 2008 - 05:17
Oliver, aka Nina, was killed by a stray dog two days ago. he was the sweetest little gentleman, and his passing breaks my heart. i am so thankful that he was able to spend the last year of his life living with lucio's dad and brother, basking in the sun, getting love from everyone in the neighborhood, and feeling safe and content. i'm thankful that i got to live with him again for a month before we moved to MI. i will miss his squeaky high meow, the way he liked being bopped on the head and his incredibly loving personality. i wish i hadn't moved him to two houses that he was uncomfortable in, but i do know that for the majority of his life, he was happy as a clam. i loved watching him take walks with my mom and sunshine, eyeballing birds in the bird feeder, kicking a catnip-filled sock like a madman. i couldn't wait to pet and kiss him when we came home in a few days.
his resting place is back home in oakland, and he was thoughtfully buried with his special Harry Potter dish and brush.
rest in peace my sweet kitty boy. you were in my life for 14 wonderful years, and thank you for your love, patience and silly nature.

homecoming - saturday, april 26, 2008 - 06:12
hey oakland,
see you in 12 days. save me a burrito!

new appreciation for spring - friday, march 14, 2008 - 11:57
it's 56 degrees and sunny today. multiple windows in the house are open and fresh air and sunlight are tumbling in. i'm wearing a t-shirt and jeans, no socks.
were i back home, 56 degrees wouldn't be anything to get excited about. however, after a winter of lows near 5 degrees, always having to wear thermals under everything and still being chilly, this feels like spring and summer are making their presence known. it's supposed to get colder this week and maybe rain/snow, but i am appreciating the hell out of this day.

snow - wednesday, february 06, 2008 - 08:09
why i like snow:
-it's gentle. while walking or driving in it, it either bounces off your windshield or face and keeps on going.
-it's lovely to look at.
-it's quiet.
-it covers up all the dirt and slush and makes things look prettier.
-dogs like to eat it.
-it's good to throw at boyfriends when made into balls.
-it's safer and more fun to drive on than rain/ice.
hooray snow.

let it snow! - sunday, january 13, 2008 - 14:50
snow has been pretty consistent for the past few days, and although i'm sure this will change in time, i love it. it's beautiful and so much more gentle than rain.

michigan - monday, january 07, 2008 - 10:56
we have arrived! travel blog to come-we were way too sick/busy to blog from the road.
it's actually pretty warm and a little rainy here, though snow will return on wednesday. lucio's family leaves us tomorrow morning, then it will just be us, the dogs and a completely vacant house we're squatting in for the week. school started today, and i have a job interview tomorrow.
SO glad to be done driving, but we saw some beautiful scenery.
we miss you oakland!
farewell oakland - wednesday, january 02, 2008 - 20:45
well, it's been real and it's been fun. tomorrow we pack up our remaining clothes and dogs and head out on a long, 4 day trek for our new home in michigan.
we will return in two years (besides the obvious visits home in the meantime). for those who we didn't get to say goodbye to in person, apologies, but our paths will cross again soon. we love you oakland, and will miss you terribly and all the people in it.
