doggie woe - thursday, october 04, 2007 - 10:20
My poor Bradley. After being unhappy that we brought a puppy home to bug the hell out of him, it seems like he's developing some arthritis. When he's laying down, he cries when he tries to right himself. I took him to the vet and they said to take an x-ray, but that it might not show anything. I just asked for the pain killers and figured I'd wait on the x-ray. I dropped him off at home and then came to work. Two hours later my dog walker called me on the verge of tears. Bradley had been attacked by a neighborhood dog that ran out of its home. Bradley, the poor deaf thing, didn't know it was coming and this dog grabbed him and thrashed him around. The dog walker took him home and calmed him down. Thankfully no superficial wounds, and after some TLC he fell asleep. Adam went home early to check on him and said everything seemed OK. Then, all of a sudden, almost all of his movements caused him to whimper and whine. So now my poor puppy is at the vet, sedated, and being x-rayed. They don't think he has any broken bones, but he has trouble hopping up to the sofa and seems notably anxious.
I went to the home of the dog owner to get her information and explain that I expect her to absorb all costs related to medical treatment Bradley has to have after this attack. She, a petchouli smelling, very dirty, berkeley-esque hippie, was obviously flustered and nervous. She proceeded to explain that "I've lived in this house for 30 years, but I don't really have much money." To which I should have responded "Well, I'm not getting your dog quarantined and picked up by animal control, so at the very least you better just pay these bills."
Anyway, I don't think we can rely on her for anything. I am, however, reconsidering filing a complaint about her dog. When I went to her house and rang the bell the dog came plowing toward the door. She had to very forcefully physically restrain him from running out.
Thankfully the dog didn't go for Albie or else he'd be dead.

Halfway Done! - friday, august 24, 2007 - 14:13
(In case you hadn't heard yet...)
Hey all!
In case you haven't heard, although I'm sure most of you have, I'm training to run a marathon! The program I'm involved in is the National AIDS Marathon Training Program, and on their behalf I'll be running the Las Vegas Marathon on December 02. But, if you know me well you know that I absolutely HATE to run and so there has to be a good reason I'm doing this. Well, besides the fact that this program raises money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation (which provides direct services to those touched by HIV/AIDS), I'm running this marathon for my best friend Amy Woolington. Amy died on January 19, 2007 and I'm running this marathon to honor the best friend I've ever had. Amy was incredibly active and vivacious, and I feel that participating in a program like this is a good way to honor her memory (she was an incredibly active and fit person) and help me grieve.
So, I've been training every Sunday morning at 7:45AM since the beginning of June and I've just passed the halfway point in my training. Last weekend I ran a very successful 14 miles and feel really good about how my training is progressing (despite a minor foot injury I'm nursing at the moment). Since my training is going so well, it's now time to shift my focus back to fundraising. In order to participate in the program I've committed to raising $3000 by September 07, and right now I'm just shy of the halfway mark. If every person who reads this post contributes just $20 to my fund, I'll meet my goal without any problem. So, if you can find it in your heart (and wallet), please follow this link and donate just $20 to my fund by clicking "Donate Now" via credit card. You can also donate via check by using the attached donor form and mailing it in. If you're not at a place where you can give $20 to the cause, like me, maybe you have a friend, or coworker, or parent who is able to contribute on your behalf. Also, a lot of employers are willing to match charitable contributions for their employees, in which case you'd only have to donate $10! (And remember, all donations are tax deductable!)
So, that's it. Most of my fundraising endeavors didn't work out, so I'm left to ask you outright for donations. However, if you're in the bay area, The Parkway is going to host "Valley Girl" on my behalf on September 04. I'll get $2 from every ticket and will be accepting cash/check donations there as well.
Lastly, I'm keeping a blog to keep all interested minds updated on the training process. You can visit it at maryamgoesrunning.blogspot.com. I've also attached my calling card to the end of this post so you can have my vital information in case you need it (to fill out the donor form or contact me). Please feel free to pass the calling card along to those who would be interested in my endeavor and my story.
That's it! Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thanks in advance for you contributions.
- Maryam
ps: Thank you SO much to those of you who have already contributed. This process is really difficult, both physically and emotionally, and it helps to have the support of friends behind me.

Workin' - monday, july 16, 2007 - 17:33
Yup, I got a job. Thank goodness. I'm the assistant to the VP of Store Design for Old Navy. I got the job in less than 24 hours after meeting with the recruiter and my supervisor. That kind of instant response was pretty awesome. I started on Friday and didn't do much of anything. My VP and the woman who is training me left for vacation this week, so I'm not really doing much, which I'm more than happy to do when I'm getting paid for it. It's only a temp job, but I could apply for it through Gap Inc. I'm considering this course of action, because I figure that being a permanent Gap Inc employee will benefit me in the future with regard to moving into the Gap Foundation... (not to mention it will benefit my wardrobe with its employee discount and free gifts every quarter...) I've got to talk to HR aboout this though. Since this job is tentative, I'm still keeping my eye open for other employment, but for now I'm satisfied to have a well paying job with a regular paycheck.
(( Big ups to Karena and Jennifer for carpooling with me on Friday! ))
Gap Inc. - thursday, july 12, 2007 - 09:43
As of tomorrow I'll be working for Gap Inc. Alison and I will be sharing the same floor!

also... - monday, july 09, 2007 - 10:50
If you are interested in donating, you may want to ask your employer about matching your donation. Many employers are willing to do this since they get a nice little write off for the donation...
(Thanks for the tip Alice!)
