Sometimes I really like my company - friday, november 17, 2006 - 14:00

Sometimes I really like my company. I work in the web/IT dept so I never really deal with what company does. But this week has been pretty big for our company.

For the last 2 yrs or so, my company has been lobbying to push the competitiveness issue into Congress. We've been pushing to get Congress and the President aware that the US is falling behind other countries in education and that it will be disasterous for the US in the future because we wont be able to compete. Our company along with our high-tech membership has been trying to get more funding for education. Nancy Pelosi is one of the leaders we have been working with since we began.

Yesterday Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as Speaker. And right after that she came to our office for our meeting on competitiveness. Her, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and Congressman George Miller (soon to be the Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee in the House) were all there. and apparently it went really well. and the meeting was packed with high-tech execs.

Pelosi had lots of great things to say about our company and our Competitiveness issue and also made these great points:

  • She wants to pass competitiveness legislation early next year but said “I don’t want it to pass with just 230 votes. I want the issue of competitiveness to be truly bipartisan. I want 350 votes to make this a real mandate that the country can get behind.”

  • In her meeting with the President she explicitly mentioned competitiveness as one area where the new Congress could work with the President given his American Competitiveness Initiative which he introduced in his State of the Union address this past January.

  • In looking back at the past year on the issue of competitiveness she talked about the Democrats’ efforts to get a bill passed and said “we tried to do this in a way that doesn’t have bipartisan obstacles. We can’t understand why it was not taken up—it’s so obvious—it’s about the future.”

  • In referring to competitiveness and education she said “nothing brings more money to the Treasury, not tax credits, nothing, more than does the education of the American people.”

  • Broadband – she told a funny story about how the making available of broadband for every American made it into the Democrats’ Innovation Agenda. In the draft of that agenda they said broadband would be available for every American in 10 years. She then spoke with Larry Page, co-founder of Google, who said “ten years, why not two?” Mrs. Pelosi then noted “so we put in 5 years.”

  • The first 3 things the new Congress will do – she was quite clear about what the first priorities will be:

    1. New Ethics Standards (as I suggested to you this past Monday in my memo on the elections, we believe the Democrats are going to forbid the acceptance by a member of the House of any gifts regardless of the monetary value. There will be other changes that won’t require legislation but rather changes in House rules.)

    2. Civility – “We are going to write civility into our rules.” She emphasized that although the Democrats were essentially left out of the legislative process they were not going to do that to the Republicans when they take over the House.

    3. Pay as you go – The Democrats are going to emphasize a return to not-too-many years ago when the budget act was in effect and new programs and initiatives had to be funded on the basis of new revenues or other programs having to be cut or reduced so as not to increase the deficit.

It feels good to be a part of something like this. even if I only do the web stuff.

i love stickers - thursday, october 19, 2006 - 11:03

i am a sticker fiend. i dont know where they all come from but i get stickers all the time. i have so many that i dont know what to do with them. everything i own eventually gets covered in stickers (or paint).

there are a couple special stickers that ive been waiting anxiously for about 2 months now. i was worried that i was too late and they were all gone. or i fucked up the paperwork or something and i wasnt going to get them.

But they finally came in the mail yesterday. These stickers are the best!!!

what makes these 4 stickers so special? well theyre magical time traveling stickers. you put them on your car and you magicly get to your destination at least twice as fast.

my morning commute normally takes about 1.5 to 2 hrs. but today i got to work in 47 minutes. 47 fucking minutes!?!!?! can you believe that shit.

i was so happy driving to work today that i was giggling most of the way here. i laughed as i flew past the 4 or 5 really bad traffic spots that i dread every morning. i waved to all the poor suckers who were stuck like i normally am. hahahaha sucker!!!

now if they will make stickers that will make the work day go faster.

ice ice baby - monday, october 09, 2006 - 12:57

had some fun with spray paint this weekend.

not so good mornings - wednesday, october 04, 2006 - 11:54

my clock radio is kinda on the fritz lately. but ive had it forever and refuse to give it up. it still works but it just doesnt play fm stations that well anymore, so i switched to the first am station that came in clearly.

so ive been waking up to some douchebag right wing talk radio every morning the last week or so. this guy is worse than rush. i cant remember his name but he's a complete douchebag. this week's topics included: clinton's fault for 911, clinton is an asshole for trying to blame bush for 911, bloggers are spreading lies about bush on the internet, the internet needs to be controlled, creationism should be taught in schools, and lots of other bullshit that i'd rather just forget. not only does he spew this crap but people call in and praise him and agree with him.

ive been pretty pissy lately and i think this has been part of the problem. waking up to this garbage is getting to me i think. it also doesnt help me get outta bed like i hoped. instead it makes me shut off the radio and hide under the covers wondering how people can think like this.

weird shit - thursday, august 24, 2006 - 14:43

while taking the kids swimming this morning, i spied a cool pair of kicks in the stall next to mine. nice pair of new balances. was never a huge nb fan but these were nice.

and as i was washing my hands after finishing my business, i see something weird in mirror. 'is that an ass?' i think to myself. sure enough the guy with the new balances is turned around in his stall so he's facing the toilet and he's squating. his ass is peeking out from under the door.

What. the. fuck.

i thought he was gonna drop one right there on the floor. but wait. he has tp in his hand. is he squating and wiping? why? his face has to be eye level with the toilet seat. ewwww. maybe he's puking? puking while pooping has got to suck.

fuck it. i dont wanna know. so i leave all grossed out.

now im keeping an eye out for that pair of new balances so i can put an a face to that ass.

so. fucking. bored. - thursday, july 27, 2006 - 15:09

why did i bother. - wednesday, july 26, 2006 - 16:37

i missed the meeting this morning cause i was dealing with the dmv. i came in to work on this project that is due next week. but i couldnt work on anything all day cause they were still testing. i only just got permission to start coding again. at 4:35. fuck. why did i bother to come in at all today.

i was here till past 9 last nite. past 7 almost every nite before this.

i shoulda just gone home after the dmv. instead i was here wasting away all day waiting to code.

ok now its finally time to code. bye.

dear fillmore - thursday, july 20, 2006 - 10:43

im sorry to say but you suck anymore. you're a total ticketmaster whore. 8$ fee per ticket. and you call it a 'convenience' charge? fuck you.

your website is now completely taken over by live nation. you are also sponsored by budwiser now??? wtf. and speaking of beer. $5.25 for a pint? come on now.

and the worst thing was that you now show commercials and ads inside. for the half hour before last nite's show, they showed verison commercials on a projection screen next to the stage. it made me ill.

im sure bill graham is pukin in his grave.

the venue is still beautiful and it always sounds awesome in there, but it just doesnt feel like the legendary fillmore i loved.

love -d.

enjoying the grind - thursday, may 11, 2006 - 18:10

wow. its past 6? i totally didnt even notice how late it was. i normally woulda been gone by now. and more than likely just staring at the clock since about 4:30 begging it to move faster. but here i am. coding away.

i've been staying late quite a bit lately. pulling 10 to 12 hr days. then going home and coding some more in front of the boob tube.

it's been a long time since i've been this into work stuff. this new project is something i've been pushing for almost 5 yrs. they finally came around to seeing what i was talking about and how useful it will be.

my webteam took this project pretty fiercely. we're all pretty excited about it. we all divided it up and took to our roles pretty well. i somehow became the lead. which i really like. it suits me nicely.

there's a shitload of stuff that still needs to be done. and we have a tight deadline but things are progressing nicely. i actually cant believe how much has been built already. almost all the functionality is there. now we just need data.

it feels really good to be this passionate about work. i hope this feeling lasts.

explosion - wednesday, april 19, 2006 - 13:18

just a few minute ago i coughed, sneezed and farted all at the same time.

it was oddly satisfying.

Why My Girl Rules - thursday, march 16, 2006 - 10:52

This is just one of a bazillion reasons, but this one I had to brag about.

We had some left over ground lamb from dinner the other night. So poo decided to make me lunch with it. She didnt make it, but look at how she packed everything into its own container so I could assemble it later. How awesome is that?

sadness is.... - tuesday, february 28, 2006 - 12:25

Instant Douchebag - monday, february 27, 2006 - 17:34

  • a car *

just add water and you have a douchebag.

    * for a bigger douchebag, substitute an suv for a car.
** this doesnt apply to all californians but fuck i cant believe how badly people drive in ca as soon as theres water on the road.

    God Damn it Oaklog - thursday, january 12, 2006 - 13:37

i went on vacation and barely used the internet for almost 2 weeks. i went back to work and vowed to not be on oaklog as much. and ive been pretty good about it till today.

but these threads about music today have totally sucked me back in.

    Traffic Hell - thursday, november 17, 2005 - 18:55

On the way to work this morning there was one accident on 880 south and 2 on 880 north. Luckily I got there right after they cleared the south bound one so it wasnt too bad getting to work.

On the way home I passed one accident as the tow truck was moving the car out of the lane. And then later witnessed 2 accidents within a half mile of each other. Luckily avoiding both of them.

AND there were 2 accidents on 880 southbound this evening too.

Lets be careful out there people.

    twinkle toes - friday, october 28, 2005 - 11:42

these came out better than i hoped.

    Not my fault - monday, october 24, 2005 - 18:34

once again i wasted half the day trying to solve a problem with the site/server and it had nothing to do with what i was doing. i like giving people the benefit of the doubt but i need to remember that its always the data's fault. not my code.

    half a day. wasted. fuck.
